Emily & Melanie — Founders. Emily is our lead instructor.
Project Heartbeat's story begins with mine. I was working in a nursing home at 20 years old, trying to find my way in the world when the coronavirus reared its head. The first lockdown was announced while my family was sharing a meal to celebrate my birthday. Things were crazy at work — we all know how well COVID spread in nursing homes. Then suddenly, I lost my job. Our patient occupancy had dropped, and they couldn't keep a full staff.
A year later, I joined the Army as a combat medic. Amidst rampant layoffs, they were one of the only employers hiring. Basic training was as unpleasant as I expected, although not quite as difficult as I thought it would be. The shocking part was Advanced Individual Training — AIT — where I learned how to be a combat medic. It was the happiest time of my life. I left that school feeling like I could accomplish anything.
But I was also upset that the skills I learned were so simple and so necessary, and yet weren't taught by default in every school. Much of it could be done by any person on the street if someone just showed them how. I started thinking about how big an impact it would make if everyone had a rudimentary understanding of how to help someone in need.
Each minute without CPR reduces the survival rate for someone in cardiac arrest by 10%. What percent reduction is acceptable to you?
From that point forward, the news became difficult for me to watch. Shootings, stabbings, riots — all with casualties, none with details. I could never help but wonder if something could have been done to keep those people alive long enough for the ambulances to arrive. Maybe if that passerby had a tourniquet in her purse, or if that neighbor knew CPR, or that teacher knew how to treat the bullet wound.
Unexpected things happen every day, and so many of us are at the scene in a panic — with every desire to help and no idea how. Even in the best of circumstances, people will have bad outcomes. We can't take responsibility for every bad thing that happens, but we have a duty to our loved ones and our communities to step in and try.
It was while I was agonizing after yet another news story that my mother suggested we start a business together to teach these skills. That's how Project Heartbeat was born.
We want to teach you CPR — but more than that, we want you to be prepared and confident to step in during any crisis. We want to build a world of greater resilience and strength. We can't stop bad things from happening, but we can minimize the damage and know that we've done everything possible. As an add-on to our other classes, we offer to teach how to "Stop Life-Threatening Bleeding" at no cost — because it is my personal goal that every single person knows what to do if they find themselves victimized.
Preparedness is not a privilege. It's something every person deserves to carry with them.
— Emily H.
Emergencies don't wait for the right moment. A cardiac event, a choking child, a sudden injury — medical emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time, to anyone. Bystanders are often the first on the scene, and the actions taken in those first few minutes can mean the difference between life and death.
We partner with Tennessee businesses and organizations to deliver onsite CPR, AED, First Aid, and Pediatric First Aid training — on their schedule, at their location. Medical practices, trades companies, restaurants, schools, churches, synagogues — wherever people gather, preparedness belongs there too.
